Set your leather up properly before you start

Leather straight off the side often has a bit of stretch, wrinkle or soft spots left in it. A glass slicker lets you work that out first. Run it firmly across the grain or the flesh side, and it pre-stretches and compresses the leather. Your piece holds its shape better, and your cuts, tooling and stamping come out cleaner and more even.

This is the slicker we put our own name on. The polished glass edge glides over leather without marking it, and the solid timber handle gives you a good two-handed grip. At around 335g it has real heft, so you’re not leaning hard on it.

What is a glass slicker used for in leatherwork?

Is a glass slicker the same as an edge slicker?
No. An edge slicker burnishes the cut edge of the leather. A glass slicker works the flat face of the leather, either the grain side or the flesh side.

Do I need to wet the leather first?
For pre-stretching and smoothing before tooling, most leatherworkers lightly dampen (case) veg-tan leather first. Work it while it’s damp, not soaking.
